Growing up in St. Cloud, I have very fond memories of picnics at the Stella Maris Chapel. It was the perfect reward for a beautiful hike around Lake Sagatagan. Such a peaceful and rewarding destination, especially during the peak of fall color. In college, I found myself being drawn back to the chapel every time I was back visiting my family. At that time I was taking photography classes, which would eventually turn into a career, so I always brought at least one camera with. When I look back on those images, the stone work, the textures, I don't just see a building. I feel a strong emotional connection and see great beauty in the way the stone chapel seems to become an extension of nature. I now find myself with a strong desire to document what this landmark means, not just to me, but to the many others that have similar ties with the chapel. While images seem the best way to tell my story, I would like to hear your stories. I want you to tell me what personal importance the chapel has for you. My ultimate goal is to compile a variety of stories/memories about the chapel; then combine them with my images into a book. The Stella Maris Chapel holds great significance for many people, and I want to make sure that significance is documented. If any of you have memories or stories about the chapel you are willing to share, please send them to stellamaris@michellebot.com. This project is just getting off the ground. As things procede, I will be updating the website to include stories that people submit, any possible dates of gallery displays, other chapel related information, or book orders once the project is final. |
